As the United States Tennis Association (U.S.TA) seeks to reduce costs, it has eschewed its responsibility for certifying and educating tennis coaches. While it does require tennis coaches to complete safeguarding training, it has largely ignored all other responsibilities. This strategy allows the organization to claim that it is not responsible for the majority of coaches.

Tim Gullikson.
In the late 1990s, the American tennis coach Tim Gullikson died of inoperable brain cancer. He was 44. Gullikson was an outstanding player and coach. As a singles player, Gullikson reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 1979 and achieved a career-high ranking of 18th. After retiring from playing professionally, he decided to devote his time to coaching. Gullikson worked with tennis greats including Martina Navratilova, Mary Joe Fernandez, and Aaron Krickstein. Eventually, he became the coach of Pete Sampras.
Tom Gullikson was an outstanding coach and an iconic figure in the sport. He was an Olympic Coach, Davis Cup captain, and Director of the USTA Player Development Program. Lendl has no coaching experience. Since retiring from the professional game in 1994, he has had little time to stay connected with the game. As such, he may not have a clear grasp of the changes that have taken place in the sport. He is also not in touch with the current crop of ATP World Tour players.
Lendl grew up in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia, and was born into a tennis-playing family. His father, Jiri Lendl, was a prominent player in his own right. His mother was the second-most-ranked female tennis player in the Czech Republic. Lendl first made the sport’s international headlines as a junior. He later won the French Open and the Wimbledon Boys’ Singles titles.
